8/15/2023 0 Comments Arlington missouri ghost townMaramec Spring itself is perhaps 500 yards from the furnace. Operated from 1827-1891, it produced pig iron for the Union Army during the Civil War. It is a remnant of the first commercially successful iron furnace west of the Mississippi. The Maramec Spring Iron Furnace is a towering structure that is evident upon entering the park. We entered Phelps County, driving west along MO-Highway 8 between Sullivan and St. I was joined on this trip by my long time friend and this blog’s editor, Jon G. My visit to Phelps county started late on the first day of a three-day, four county trip through central Missouri in mid November 2014.
